5 Easy SEO Tricks for People Who Don’t Code

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can help grow your business immensely so it's extremely important to have some SEO strategy as part of your business plan. In today’s blog, we’ll cover five simple SEO tricks for those who just don't code.

A lot of SEO tips and tricks look like they require an extensive knowledge of programming. The good news is, a lot of SEO tricks can actually be done without ever needing to learn any sort of programming or coding!

1. Schema markup generators
If you don’t already know about schema markup and why it’s so important for your website’s SEO, check out our article, “Schema 101: What is Schema Markup, and Why Do I Need It for My Business Website?”. As a quick and general summary, schema markup is structured data that you add to the coding of your website, and it tells search engines what to do with the information on your website. Websites that use schema markup rank an average of four times higher on search engine results pages (SERPs) than websites that don’t.

The good news is that you don’t have to be a programming expert to start using schema markup! You can use tools like Google Structured Data Markup Helper and Schema Markup Generator. Be careful not to mess up your site layout by following instructions and having a backup of the original code saved in the case that anything goes wrong.

2. Removing low-ranking pages
Another way to improve your SEO without needing to know how to code is to simply remove your lowest-ranking pages because they are bad for your domain authority. Domain authority is a search engine ranking score based on the “authority” that your website has, which can be improved with high-quality content, regularly updating your website and building quality backlinks (which will all be discussed next).

Low-ranking pages hurt your overall domain authority by lowering your average “score.” How do you know if a page on your website is low-ranking? Consider the following:

  • Average number of visitors over time
  • Page speed
  • Higher bounce rates
  • Engagement with the page (you can use a heat map for this)

By removing your low-ranking pages, you can improve your overall domain authority and migrate the content to another existing page. The more high-quality content a page has, the better it tends to do with search engines, which brings us to our next point.

3. Add more content to your pages
Generally speaking, the more high-quality content that you have on your pages (meaning more words, longer length, etc.), the better. Long form content has proven to be better for SEO because it is more engaging, has more opportunities to incorporate and strategize keywords, and it tends to be more shareable.

Since Google and other search engines prefer content-rich sites, length alone is not enough to improve your SEO. Your content should be 100% original, use long-tail keywords, and include links.

If it’s difficult to incorporate more content on your pages, consider launching a blog for your website. gives you the opportunity to consistently create content and regularly update your website.

4. Submit your sitemap to Google
A sitemap is like an outline of your website, and it is also an important tool for website owners because it allows you to organize your web pages and find them faster. It is also useful for tracking down 404 errors and redirect links that don’t work.

Most content management systems (CMS) automatically generate a sitemap for you, but if that is not the case, then start building one yourself. A good resource is sitemaps.org.

When you submit your sitemap to Google, you are allowing your website to be examined and “crawled,” giving Google an updated version of your site. For more information or support from Google, click here.

5. Building backlinks
A backlink is when a page on another website includes a link that goes back to your own site. You can think of it as your website getting mentioned or cited, which shows search engines that your website is more likely to be trustable.

Getting backlinks can be tricky, as lot of it is out of your control. There are, however, a few different ways to start out with building backlinks to your site. Consider incorporating the following strategies to get others to link back to your website:

  • Submitting blog posts or articles to other websites
  • Publishing press releases
  • Submitting your website and/or business to online business directories
  • Connecting with other businesses, influencers, and buyers on social media
  • News articles

As everyone jumps on the SEO bandwagon, finding new ways to improve SEO can be tricky, especially for those who don’t code or program. Hopefully this article covered a few ways that you can incorporate these techniques without needing to learn how to code!
